Foray to Stoodley Glen with the HSS, 27-10-12

Stoodley Glen

Our interest in fungi was growing and we wanted to gain more knowledge on the subject. So we contacted Steve Blacksmith, Chair of the Halifax Scientific Society (HSS) and fungi recorder and arranged to accompany him on this foray. Oliver had a amazing time and we were very grateful  to Steve for all of his information and knowledge, not only of fungi, but natural history in general. We decided to join the HSS after this, and Oliver became the youngest member, aged four years old.

 The Blusher (Amanita rubescens).

Birch Polypore or Razorstrop Fungus (Piptoporus betulinus).

This was our first record of a Piptoporus and Oliver was fascinated by it's texture, as it was very  rubbery and smooth.

An unidentified Coprinus species, growing on dung.

A collection of some of our edible finds of the day. Species included Amethyst Deceiver (Laccaria amethystina), Meadow Waxcap (Hygrocybe pratensis) and a Parrot Waxcap (Hygrocybe psittacina). Photo courtesy of Steve Blacksmith.

White Saddle (Helvella crispa). Photo courtesy of Steve Blacksmith.

Oliver proudly holding his specimen of Helvella crispa

Common Earthball (Scleroderma citrinum).

Lastly a really awful photo of maybe a Yellow Club (Clavulinopsis helvola) or possibly Apricot Club (Clavulinopsis luteoalba).
