Upper Foot 25.02.2014

Found and identified by Michael.

Deer Shield (Pluteus cervinus).

Mixenden Reservoir 21.02.2014

Michael and I investigated the conifer plantation beside the reservoir and found these species of fungi pictured below. We didn't manage to get round all of the wood so we are planning to return soon.

Antrodia serialis on Pinus sylvestris stump. It has been noted as being uncommon but widespread and I do know where there is another spectacular example in the Crags.

Netted Crust (Byssomerulius corium).

Peniophora limitata - above and an aged one below.

White Brain (Exidia thuretiana).

Purplepore Bracket (Trichaptum abietinum) on Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris).

Conifercone Cap (Baeospora myosura) on a buried pine cone. Above and gills below.

Spores ellipsoid, smooth 3-4 x 1.5-2. 1000x above and to demonstrate that the spores were amyloid at 400x below.

Gallows Pole Hill and Crawstone Hall Wood 20.02.2014

Peachysteve and I had a walk up to the Sweet Chestnut plantation with Basil and Lace and shown below are the photographs of what we found. Does anyone know the history of Gallows Pole Hill? Who planted the wood and was anyone ever hanged there as the name suggests?

Chicken of the Woods (Laetiporus sulphureus) on Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa). Steve's photo above and mine showing the point of attachment below.

Blushing Bracket (Daedaleopsis confragosa) on oak (Quercus. sp). Steve's photos above and below.

Wood Hedgehog (Hydnum repandum) - Steve's photo above and mine below.

Exidia plana - Steve's photo.

Winter Polypore (Polyporus brumalis) Steve's photo above and mine below. Found in Crawstone Hall Wood.

Spores ellipsoid to allantoid, smooth, hyaline. 6-8 x 2-2.5 microns.

White Brain (Exidia thuretiana).

Steve's photo of Rosy Crust (Peniophora incarnata) interestingly on Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa) above and my photo on its favourite host- Gorse (Ulex europaeus) below.

Spores smooth, hyaline, ellipsoid. 8-10 x 4-5 microns.

Peniophora quercina on the top half of the branch and Waxy Crust (Vuilleminia comedens) below. I have noticed that these two species frequently grow together on oak.

Scarlet Elfcup (Sarcoscypha austriaca).  The only solitary specimen that we found in Crawstone Hall Wood.

(Diatrypella favacea) - The new proposed name is Birch Blackhead.

Asci contained lots of spores and there were too many to count. Tips did not react to Lugol.

Spores slender, allantoid. 5-6 x 1 microns.

Cinnamon Porecrust (Fuscoporia ferrea) above and below.

Note the three layers of tubes which indicate to me that it is three years old.

Common Grey Disco (Mollisia cinerea).

Asci 8 spored, tips blued in Lugol.

Spores 7-9 x 2-2.5, some two guttulate, hyaline smooth with rounded ends. Trying to take a decent image of them was really tricky and this photograph is by no means satisfactory, so sorry folks.

Witches' Butter (Exidia glandulosa).

Chaetosphaerella phaeostroma. Found in Crawstone Hall Wood.

Spores 33-37 x 7-8.5 microns.

Shelf Hall Park 18.02.2014

I am trying to plot different locations in Calderdale for the H.galndulosae so I went to the park for no other reason that to get another record in a different place. It's Oliver's 6th birthday tomorrow so I was in a rush to get to the shops so I didn't hang around for long.

Heteromycopha glandulosae on Witches' Butter (Exidia glandulosa) attached to oak (Quercus. sp). These must have been right at the top of the tree and I found them only because the branch had snapped and was hanging down towards the ground. It looked to have happened quite recently.

Hathershelf Scout Wood 17.02.2014

I had thirty minutes to spare in the wood with Basil before I picked Oliver up from school.

Heteromycophaga glandulosae parasitising and forming galls on Witches' Butter (Exidia glandulosa) - above and below.

Orange Mosscap (Rickenella fibula) in the wood above and below in my plant pot at home on the same day.
